What Joint Pain Is and Why It Lingers
Joint pain is aching, stiffness or swelling where two bones meet: the knee, hip, shoulder, spine, hands, wrists, ankles or jaw. It can start in the joint's own cartilage, ligaments, tendons and bursae, or in inflammation that begins somewhere else in the body.
Pain after a fall or a hard round of golf usually settles within days to weeks. Pain that lasts longer than about three months, keeps returning or moves from joint to joint is a sign that something underneath has not been addressed.
We treat the painful joint directly, and we also look for the inflammation, nutrient gaps or chronic illness that keep it from healing.
Three Sources We Sort Out First
- Mechanical: worn cartilage, old injuries and strained or loose ligaments.
- Inflammatory: arthritis and immune activity that inflame the joint lining.
- Systemic: infections, food reactions or toxic load that show up as aching joints.
Causes of Joint Pain We Look For
Joint pain is a symptom. These are the drivers we check for before choosing a treatment, including several that a standard pain workup can miss.
Osteoarthritis
Cartilage wear in the knees, hips, hands and spine, often worse with activity and better with rest.
Old Injuries
Sprains and strains that never fully healed can leave a joint unstable, weak and sore.
Tendon and Bursa Strain
Tennis elbow, rotator cuff strain and hip bursitis from repetitive use on the course, court or trail.
Inflammatory Arthritis
Rheumatoid and other autoimmune arthritis inflame the joint lining and often bring morning stiffness.
Lyme and Chronic Infection
Lyme disease can cause aching or swollen joints. Dr. Yosef treats chronically ill patients with Lyme and other elusive illnesses.
Food Reactions and Gut Health
Food sensitivities and gut imbalances can add to inflammation that settles in the joints.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Low levels of key vitamins and minerals can slow tissue repair. We test for them and replace what is missing.
Mold and Toxic Load
Mold illness and toxic overload are among the hidden drivers of body-wide aches that we evaluate.
Symptoms and When to Get Help
- Knee or hip pain on stairs, walking or standing up
- Morning stiffness that is slow to ease
- Swelling, warmth or tenderness around a joint
- Clicking, catching or a joint that gives way
- Less range of motion in a shoulder, hip or neck
- Aches in several joints along with fatigue or gut symptoms
- Pain that wakes you at night
- Pain that limits work, exercise or sleep
An evaluation makes sense when pain has lasted more than a few weeks, keeps coming back, or no longer responds to rest and over-the-counter pain relievers.
Get Urgent Care First If
A joint is suddenly hot, red and very swollen with a fever, you cannot bear weight after an injury, or a joint looks out of place. These need same-day emergency evaluation.
How We Find the Source of Your Pain
Your first visit starts with a full history and an exam of the joint and how you move. When it would change your plan, we add specialized testing that looks beyond the joint itself.
Thermography
A non-contact heat-imaging scan that can show patterns of inflammation in and around painful areas.
Heart Rate Variability
A measure of nervous-system balance and stress load, which shape how the body handles pain and recovery. About HRV testing
EAV Testing
Electrodermal Acupuncture According to Voll is one of the specialized assessments we use when building your plan.
Labs and Allergy Testing
Customized blood and urine tests and allergy testing for nutrient levels, inflammation and food reactions.
Non-Surgical Joint Pain Treatments We Offer
Each plan pairs care for the joint with care for what drives the pain. Most patients receive two or more of these together.
| Treatment | What It Involves | Often Chosen For |
|---|---|---|
| PRP Injections | Platelet-rich plasma concentrated from a small sample of your own blood, injected into the painful area. | Tendon and ligament injuries and worn cartilage. |
| Prolozone | Medical ozone with a vitamin and mineral solution, injected into the joint or soft tissue. Prolozone injections | Arthritic or chronically inflamed joints. |
| Avacen and Biomodulator | Devices we use in our office to help reduce pain and inflammation. | Pain in several areas, or support between injection visits. |
| Anti-Inflammatory IV Therapy | IV formulas for anti-inflammatory, immune and detoxification support. | Body-wide inflammation, fatigue and nutrient needs beyond what pills can cover. |
| Orthomolecular Nutrition | Testing for deficiencies, customized oral and IV vitamins and minerals, and dietary counseling based on allergy testing. | Slow healing, food reactions and inflammation-related pain. |
| Herbal and Homeopathic Care | Natural remedies selected for your symptoms and test results. | Patients who prefer natural options alongside their other treatment. |
Our care is non-surgical. When an exam suggests a joint needs a surgical opinion, that becomes part of the conversation about your next step.

Joint Pain Questions, Answered
Cost of Joint Pain Treatment
Your price depends on the joints involved and the treatments in your plan, so we go over it with you once the plan is set.
Book a ConsultationWhat Causes Joint Pain Without an Injury?
Osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis are common causes, but aching joints can also come from chronic infections such as Lyme disease, nutrient deficiencies, food reactions or mold exposure. That is why we test before we treat. Finding the driver tells us whether the joint itself or the whole body needs the attention.
Is PRP or Prolozone Better for Knee Pain?
Neither is better for every knee. PRP uses platelets from your own blood and is often chosen for tendon, ligament and cartilage wear, while Prolozone uses medical ozone with a vitamin and mineral solution and is often chosen for arthritic or chronically inflamed joints. Dr. Yosef recommends one, the other or both after examining your knee.
How Is PRP Different From a Cortisone Shot?
A cortisone shot is a steroid that calms inflammation in the joint for a period of time. PRP is made from your own blood and is used to support the tissue's own repair process rather than to suppress inflammation. Many patients come to us after cortisone relief has started to fade.
Can Diet and Supplements Help Joint Pain?
They can be part of the plan. We use orthomolecular medicine to find nutritional deficiencies and correct them with customized oral and IV dosing, and our dietary counseling is based on allergy testing and your goals. Nutrition works alongside injections or devices rather than replacing them when a joint is damaged.
Does Insurance Cover Joint Pain Treatment?
Coverage depends on your plan and on which services your treatment includes. Our team can go over costs and payment with you once your plan is set, so there are no surprises before treatment starts.
Do You See Patients From Outside Scottsdale, AZ?
