What an EAV Reading Measures
EAV stands for Electrodermal Acupuncture According to Voll, named for the German physician who developed the method in the 1950s. It measures how easily a very small, low-voltage current passes through your skin at specific acupuncture points.
Most of the points sit at the ends of your fingers and toes. Each one is associated with a body system or organ, so a set of readings forms a map rather than a single score.
The meter runs from 0 to 100, and practitioners read values near the middle as balanced. A reading that rises and then sinks, called an indicator drop, is treated as a point worth a closer look.
Inside an EAV Session
The test is quiet and hands-on. You stay seated and clothed, with shoes and socks off so we can reach the points on your feet.
- No needlesNothing breaks the skin
- SeatedFully clothed, feet bare
- GentleA current too small to feel
- 1
Your History First
We review your symptoms, past labs and goals so the reading is interpreted against your whole story.
- 2
Holding the Electrode
You hold a smooth metal electrode in one hand. It completes a circuit with the meter and carries a current too small to feel.
- 3
Point by Point
A blunt probe is pressed gently against points on your fingers and toes while the meter records each value. Nothing breaks the skin.
- 4
Testing Remedies
When it helps, remedies can be placed in the circuit to see how a reading responds. This guides which homeopathic or herbal options we consider.
- 5
Reviewing It Together
We walk you through the pattern, what it may point to, and what further testing or treatment makes sense.
Who Considers EAV Testing
Many of our patients come to us after years of being told their results look normal while they still feel unwell. EAV is one way we widen the search.
- Chronic fatigue that rest and routine labs have not explained.
- Lyme disease and mold illness, where toxic overload may be part of the picture.
- Digestive complaints such as SIBO, IBS and histamine intolerance.
- Suspected sensitivities that could shape your nutritional plan.
- Patients already in treatment who want to see how their readings shift over time.
EAV, HRV and Lab Work Side by Side
EAV is one part of our specialized testing. Each test answers a different question, which is why we rarely rely on one alone.
| EAV testing | HRV testing | Blood and urine tests | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it looks at | Skin conductance at acupuncture points | Timing between heartbeats | Markers in your blood and urine |
| How it is done | Hand electrode and a blunt probe on fingers and toes | Surface sensors while you rest | A blood draw and a sample |
| What it suggests | Systems that may be under strain and remedies to consider | How your nervous system handles stress | Measured levels, deficiencies and disease markers |
| Where it fits | A guide for where to look next | A repeatable measure to track | Confirmation and diagnosis |

What EAV Can and Cannot Tell You
We want you to know exactly what this test is. EAV is a complementary assessment, and we treat its results as clues to follow up, never as a verdict.
What it can do
- Give a quick, non-invasive view across many body systems in one visit
- Point us toward areas that deserve further testing
- Help us choose between homeopathic and herbal options
- Offer a baseline we can compare with later readings
What it cannot do
- Diagnose a disease or rule one out
- Replace an exam, bloodwork or imaging
- Stand in for emergency or cardiac care when you have urgent symptoms
- Give a meaningful result without your history beside it

EAV Testing Questions, Answered
Clear answers to what patients ask before their first reading.
Cost depends on whether EAV is done on its own or as part of a broader testing plan. We go over pricing at your consultation, before any testing begins.
What does an EAV test look for?
EAV measures how easily a very small current passes through the skin at acupuncture points on the hands and feet. Practitioners read those values as signs of balance or strain in the body systems linked to each point. We use the pattern to decide where to look more closely, then follow up with other testing where it is needed.
Does EAV testing hurt?
No needles are used and nothing breaks the skin. You hold a metal electrode in one hand while a blunt probe is pressed against points on your fingers and toes. Most patients feel only light pressure from the probe.
How should I prepare for an EAV test?
Skip lotions and creams on your hands and feet that day, because they change how the skin conducts. Drink water as usual and wear clothing that lets you remove your shoes and socks easily. We will tell you if anything else applies to your situation.
How long does an EAV session take?
It depends on how many points are checked and whether we test remedies during the visit. Many sessions take under an hour. We then review the pattern with you and explain what it may mean.
Can EAV replace blood work?
No. EAV is a complementary assessment and it does not diagnose disease. We read it alongside your history, an exam and, where they are needed, customized blood and urine tests, so a single reading is never the whole story.
Is EAV the same as other electrodermal scans?
Many devices measure skin conductance, but they work in different ways. Classic EAV uses a hand-held probe placed on individual points by a trained practitioner, rather than a fully automated scan. The value comes from how the reading is interpreted alongside the rest of your workup.
